Preview of MythTV 0.22

I have not been posting a lot lately, but that is not to say that there hasn’t been any new to report on - quite the opposite.

First of all there has been a story written on MythUI - the new OpenGL based interface which will be the default user interface for MythTV 0.22.

Personally I don’t like the examples very much, but hopefully that is just a matter of time before lots of updated themes makes MythTV 0.22 the best looking MythTV release so far. Certainly theĀ  has been laid for those themes.

One user is saying on the users mailinglist that the new UI screens feel snappier than the old screens. Maybe because rendering them is offloaded to the GPU.

  1. I agree it is butt ugly. Especially that home icon thingy from windings font, it’s… *sigh* not even funny.

XBMC2 that’s how modern media center should look and feel like. Let’s hope they get that new unified dvr frontend up and running soon, so I can ditch mythfrontend completely.

  2. XBMC does look fantastic. I’m using it already on my AppleTV, also meant as a replacement for the MythTV frontend.

  3. Thanks for your input Jari, wow you really make contributing to mythtv feel worthwhile :-\

  4. I agree that mythtv is not the most beautiful htpc software out there. But it is stable and it works every time. I tried media portal a year ago, it looked great but more often than not the recordings failed. So i switched back to mythtv and i’m sticking to it! After all you are most probably using your htpc for watching movies/tv and listening to music rather than admiring its ui. With the new ui mythtv has every potential to look as good as the other software out there.
Justinh keep up the good work! I can’t wait to download the new .22 version!

  5. I might as well go on record that I’ve already started a new theme. Its working title is ‘Concept’ and is (even if I say so myself) even now looking like the best thing I’ve ever done. Taking how I feel about my previous work into account that isn’t saying much.. but I’m very happy with it so far. And no, there are no glyphs from Wingdings in there. I always wondered how long it’d be before somebody said something about that in public. And yes, it’s being developed using open source software in its entirety! Not a move to win over the purists.. simply because it suits me to do so ;-)

Teaser screenshots will possibly be made available soon.

  6. Well, publishing this before anyone had a chance to start working on MythUI themes was useful. Now people who do want to work on them are more irritated with the “audience” than ever. Nice.

MythUI’s just fine for me, thanks.

Wonder how everyone here would like their car if it was four wheels bolted onto a chassis on an assembly line.

  7. Will they improve the 5 second channel change time? Nope, because they refuse to admit it is a problem. Even with the channel browser, 5 seconds is a LONG time to wait. Switch between capture cards and it takes twice as long. Windows Media Center manages channel changes on identical hardware in about a second. That’s depressing.

If you go so far as to pretend that MythTV isn’t primarily for watching TV, and is instead only another media player, well then it’s lagging far behind XBMC, Boxee, and Elisa.

  8. Who is this “THEY” you speak of? You mean everyone of us who uses open source and could do the trouble shooting to find out what is causing this for SOME people? the unfortunate problem is that the devs can’t reproduce the long changes and those of us experiencing it have done no devling into code nor given specifics on how they can reproduce it.

so they are NOT saying you aren’t experiencing it and that it doesn’t exist. they are saying that if they can’t trigger the problem on their end then THEY can’t very well find the cause. Seems kinda reasonable to me. I don’t use LiveTV really so I haven’tbothered to look into it…. therefore I am also part of the THEY that is not helping fix it.

Live TV and recorded programs are treated the same in mythtv. So it is recording your live TV to disk. V useful sometimes.

5 seconds is long - but for me it only takes 1or 2 seconds. It depends upon your hardware / setup. Thats with DVB-S and DVB-T (quicker) 4 tuner setup.

Media center is the funniest thing I have ever heard - windows for stability - no thankyou. My mythbox stays online for months and months not 1 week until it needs an update from MS or it decides to be part of a bot net.

Boxee is very nice , but full of bugs as its alpha. XBMC is pretty good. But all of these fall over when you have TV programs with slight issues with reception. Audio / Video out of sync is common, total failure to play can also happen.

Myth doesn’t suffer from these problems half as much - it has a special database for keeping A/V in sync.

So therefore , why do you think XBMC is better for watching TV?
