Boxee article

On Phoronix they have a new article titled “Boxee: A New Competitor For MythTV?“.

Boxee apparently has a nicer interface than MythTV. This is not a huge surprise. This is well known and currently being worked on for MythTV 0.22. Also Boxee has a social twist to it.

Still it is always nice with inspiration and I also look forward to MythTV with a more polished user interface.

Boxee is currently in private beta, but you might be able to get an invite from Phoronix.

Also here is Boxee on Tekzilla:

  1. The whole concept of ‘competition’ in OSS software is completely wrong IMHO. It would assume that OSS developers are in the game for ‘customers’ aka users. That generally isn’t the case.

To date mythtv is the only PVR app of note for the linux platform. Why? Because it’s the only one which isn’t just a dumb media player.

Oh wow sure, look at the fancy shiny UI of the new ‘contender’ but can it record television or does it rely completely on users getting their media together from ‘other sources’? Hmmmm. Oh well, I’ll go back to sleep.

Don’t like mythtv / XYZ app? FINE. Use something else & nobody (I repeat nobody) will care.

All that said though… what if mythtv had this ‘bliingy’ UI which causes so much excitement among mere users hmm? Well, it’s coming. I wonder where that’s going to leave all the ‘competition’ :-P

  2. Hi Justin.

I agree completely. I would much rather have MythTV as it is today than Boxee as it is today. But I look forward to the day where I can have MythTV with the “slick” UI.
