I ran across this thread on mythtv-users mailing list the other day. It discusses various ways to avoid SSH attacks. If you have this blocked by your firewall, then it is not for you, but many people like to have a way to remotely access their server.
The thread references this page which has a very good description of ways to avoid getting hacked.

Very good read. There are some neat solutions out there. I use deny hosts.The new version I have syncs a list of offending ip addresses with a master list on the internet.
