MythBuntu 8.10 Alpha 4 has been released

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

This is based on Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) which has a release date of October 30th. The release notes mentions that:

  • The guided partitoner in the installer will now default the recordings partition to XFS instead of EXT3.
  • Lots of bug fixes across the board in Ubiquity and Mythbuntu Control Centre.
  • Several MythTV bugs that were sent upstream got fixed.

Because it is now based on Ubuntu 8.10, it includes the 2.6.26-5.15 kernel and X.Org server 1.5.

I’m going to see Dark Knight tonight, so I just thought I would share this new MythTV theme with you. It is 4:3 based unfortunately.

MythNetTV release 3

People traditionally use tuners of some sort to get content into MythTV, but video podcasting is getting more and more popular and is often of very high quality. MythTV doesn’t really have any support for this. Maybe MythNews… But then we have MythNetTV which has just been updated to release 3. It will let you subscribe to video podcasts and actually insert them into the recordings menu.

Here is a list of the changes in the latest release:

  • Started work on an RSS exporter for MythTV recordings
  • DX50 doesn’t need transcode
  • Tweaked supported video mime types so “Tikibar TV” and “Ask a ninja” work
  • First cut of Bittorrent support
  • Schema upgrades
  • Archive recordings as well as importing them
  • Improved –list output
  • Subtitle restrictions on download as well
  • Make subscriptions inactive instead of deleting them (for unsubscribe)
  • Better filename safening
  • More markread options
  • Refactored code to be more sane
  • Don’t archive things imported from the archive location
  • Bulk import (–importmanylocal)

More options for controlling MythTV from your iPhone

MyMote

I recently wrote about MyMote, which is an iPhone/iPod Touch application which will let you remote control MythTV. It is basically a replacement for your custom remote control, except that it has built in a TV guide.

Although some blogs have stated that it will let you schedule recordings, I’m pretty sure that is not the case - at least not yet…

MyMote is now available for download through the iTunes App store.

Remote Remote GH

There is also another application available. This one is a little more powerful in my mind. It is called “Remote Remote GH“.

Besides working as a smart remote control with your up, down, etc. keys, it will also let you browse the list of shows currently on TV as well as your recorded content which you can then start to watch.

So why not just use the existing MythTV interface on your TV? Well, it is always nice to have different options and with the nice, simple iPhone interface, I can definately see myself using this.

Boxee article

On Phoronix they have a new article titled “Boxee: A New Competitor For MythTV?“.

Boxee apparently has a nicer interface than MythTV. This is not a huge surprise. This is well known and currently being worked on for MythTV 0.22. Also Boxee has a social twist to it.

Still it is always nice with inspiration and I also look forward to MythTV with a more polished user interface.

Boxee is currently in private beta, but you might be able to get an invite from Phoronix.

Also here is Boxee on Tekzilla:

xf86-video-intel 2.4.0 released

I’m back from vacation so some of this is a little dated…

Last week Intel released version 2.4.0 of their linux video driver.

The nex X4500 chipset is supported and also there is now HDMI support for the ASUS P5E-VM board. And then of course bugfixes.

MythTV iPhone remote app ready

MyMote is the name of the application and it has just been announced that it is available. Well, availability can be a bit of a problem here to begin with. Apple has to approve each iPhone application and although the approval was requested on July 1st, it has still not been given. Until MyMote is approved, there are other ways to get it (see Ad Hoc section).

MyMote will let you remote control MythTV. It is configurable, so you can add and remove buttons and also move them around.

Last but not least it has a built-in program guide from which you can start live TV.
